History of Journalism in Indonesia

The history of journalism in Indonesia began when the Dutch colonized Indonesia. The occupation was marked by the public of the Memories der Nouvelles newspaper in 1615 by the VOC governor-general Jan Pieterzoon Coen. This newspaper was originally still handwritten until in 1688 the Dutch East Indies government had a printing press sent from the Netherlands. Finally. they made a newspaper with the first printing. The contest of this first printed newspaper included provisions and agreements made between the Dutch and the Sultan of Makasar.

After the first newspaper appeared, other newspapers slowly emerged. then the development of the world of journalism and newspapers in Indonesia at that time to climb it was recorded that there were about 30 Dutch-language newspapers. They were 27 Indonesian-language newspapers, and one Javanese-language in the mid 19th century.

Media freedom in Indonesia increased considerably after the end of President Suharto's rule, during which the Ministry of Information monitored and controlled domestic media and restricted foreign media. Long suppressed and harassed by the New Orde, the Indonesian press is now among the freest and liveliest in Asia. The trend toward somewhat greater pluralism and openness had begun in the late New Order when the regime allowed the founding of a number of new television and radio stations.

And until now journalists in Indonesia have always increased the type for giving readers any news. Now you can get any news anywhere and anytime on your gadget and also news from any country you can get easily. Social media you have also can give you any kind of information from the government or just gossip.
